DJI Phantom 3 4K Professional Maiden Flight

Here’s a fun recap video of my DJI Phantom 3 maiden flight. I try a few basic maneuvers but nothing too crazy as I’m still getting familiar with the controls. After practicing on micro and mini quadcopters, the Phantom 3 is a breeze to fly with it’s incredible stability and flight behavior. And what about that 4K camera? I have to say, it’s very impressive. DJI must have gotten a little tired of GoPro digging into their real estate so they designed a camera that is so fully integrated into the Phantom that it’s like one piece. Once you get used to the flight behavior, it’s really about how to control your camera to get smooth, epic shots. And the best part is everything just WORKS. While I have a great time building my own miniquads, there’s nothing like flying a quadcopter that consistently responds to your controls. Hands down, the DJI Phantom 3 4K Professional is a winner.

Fun Fact: all of those silky smooth slider shots were made with the Konova K3 Slider and Master Pan which I’ll be reviewing very soon.

Wouldn’t have minded upscaled Cube footage to see that DJI 4K stuff. Gimbal looks like its doing a hell of a job though. Made me real excited about my Solo but I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for some non promotional footage to hit the web… didn’t think when I pre-ordered in April that by mid-june, 3DR still thinks its cool to leave us in the dark.

The Gimbal with the GPS makes the Phantom 3 rock solid when in the air, even during windy days. I’m still amazed at how stable the footage is everytime I fly. When was 3DR Solo supposed to launch? Did they say why there is a delay?

Yea that onboard GPS is a really cool feature. Knew it made indoors flying possible, but didn’t realize the benefits it had in terms of stabilization. Pretty sure I remember 3DR saying late May, when they debuted the Solo at NAB. B+H told me they were hoping to ship just the quadcopter orders early June sometime and the Gimbal + Solo package by July. However, from the looks of things the quadcopter orders haven’t shipped and I’m assuming that means the gimbal won’t be ready on schedule either. Which sucks because its prime flying weather right now.

Yeah at NAB, 3DR was pushing really hard for their release date and it appeared they were ahead of schedule at the time. Not sure what the problem is but the Phantom 3 is really grabbing the spotlight right now. I mean the hardware integration is just so seamless that it helps you focus on capturing great aerial shots with framing and flight moves.

  • Looks dope!
