Biltwell Gringo S ECE Review: The Full-Face Helmet I Trust for Faster Super73 City Riding

When my Super73 Z1 was stock, I felt pretty comfortable staying under 20 mph with a more “action sports” style helmet. But once I upgraded the bike (controller + 48V battery) and started mixing it up with real downtown traffic at 30 mph—and occasionally higher downhill—I wanted a proper full-face helmet.

That’s what pushed me to the Biltwell Gringo S ECE.

I’ve been riding with it on city streets, in daytime heat, and especially at night. Here’s how it’s been in real-world EV life.

Why I Switched to a True Full-Face

My previous helmet was a Ruroc RG1-DX Core. I still think it’s a well-constructed helmet with a unique look, and for slower cruising it felt fine.

The problem wasn’t comfort—it was confidence.

At higher speeds, I wanted something that felt more like true motorcycle-style protection with a real chin bar and a face shield. Once your pace goes up and you’re surrounded by cars, the “what if I go down?” question hits differently.

First Impressions: Retro Done Right

The Gringo S has that classic 70’s vibe that fits the Super73 mini-bike aesthetic perfectly. I went with Hazard Orange, and I’m glad I did. In traffic it’s noticeably more visible than an all-black helmet, and at night it catches light in a way that makes me feel easier to spot.

It also has a wide eye port, and that ends up mattering a lot more than I expected.

Fit and Comfort (Round-Head Friendly)

My head measures about 58 cm, which puts me in a Large on Biltwell’s sizing. The fit has been comfortable for my more round-shaped head.

Out of the box, the cheek pads definitely gave me that chipmunk look. It’s snug in that “new helmet” way, but it started to feel more natural as I wore it. If you want to fine-tune fit, Biltwell sells different cheek pad thicknesses, which is a nice option if your face shape needs it.

One of the most pleasant surprises for me was how the interior liner feels. The EPS liner setup gives it that “real helmet” structure, but the overall feel on my head is soft and supportive—almost like it gently forms to you after a few minutes.

Weight: Heavier Than My Old Setup, But Balanced

The Gringo S is heavier than the Ruroc I was using.

That said, it doesn’t feel awkward or front-heavy. The weight feels evenly distributed, so once I’m riding I’m not thinking about it constantly. For me, the tradeoff was worth it because the helmet feels more substantial and confidence-inspiring at higher speeds.

Visibility: The Big Upgrade I Didn’t Expect

That wide port is a major win.

With my old setup, I always had a slight “looking through gear” feeling—especially when glancing downward. With the Gringo S, my peripheral vision feels more open, and in city riding that translates directly into comfort and awareness.

Pedestrians, cars creeping at intersections, street lights, random movement in the bike lane—everything feels easier to catch without turning my whole head.

You can also wear sunglasses inside the helmet, which is great for daytime rides.

Face Shield Reality (And the Closeout Catch)

The Gringo S uses a flip-up polycarbonate face shield, and functionally it’s exactly what I want for an e-bike/moped-style ride: flip it up when you want airflow, drop it down when you want wind protection.

But there’s an important caveat if you buy older/closeout inventory.

The Generation 1 shield had a delamination issue where the coating can bubble or flake. That’s why some deals are so cheap (mine was around $100 on closeout). The good news: Biltwell has addressed it in newer models, and they’ll replace a defective shield free of charge.

For night riding, I strongly prefer a clear visor. I also have a chrome mirror shield that’s fine in daylight, but at night I want maximum clarity.

Ventilation: Minimal on Purpose, Better Than Expected in Motion

This is a retro helmet, so you’re not getting modern vent port styling all over it. Venting is basically happening through the opening around the shield area and airflow coming in around the chin.

I rode in warm weather (mid-80s °F), and I didn’t feel like I was baking. Once I’m moving, airflow around the chin area keeps things feeling surprisingly manageable.

If you’re someone who runs hot or you ride in slow, stop-and-go summer traffic for long stretches, this is still something to think about. But for the way I ride—steady city cruising—it’s been fine.

Downtown and Night Riding: Where This Helmet Earned Its Keep

Most of my riding ends up being city streets at night.

This is where the Gringo S made the biggest difference for me:

The wide field of view helps me feel more aware and in control.

The bright Hazard Orange color adds a layer of visibility that I genuinely appreciate.

The full-face design gives me more peace of mind at higher speeds around cars.

Paired with the bike’s lights, the whole setup just feels safer.

What We Like

Strong full-face confidence for faster e-bike / mini-bike style riding

Retro styling matches Super73 vibes beautifully

Wide field of view improves awareness in traffic

Hazard Orange stands out, especially at night

Comfortable fit, especially once it breaks in

Balanced feel on-head even though it’s heavier than my previous helmet

Things To Consider

Heavier than action sports style helmets like the Ruroc RG1-DX

Minimal ventilation by design (retro look comes with that tradeoff)

If you buy closeout/older stock, the Generation 1 shield may delaminate (but replacement is available)

Cheek pads can feel very snug at first; some riders may want thinner pads

Final Thoughts

If you’re riding a stock e-bike at mellow speeds, a lot of helmets can feel “good enough.” But once you start riding faster—especially in downtown traffic—your priorities change.

The Biltwell Gringo S ECE gave me the biggest thing I was looking for: confidence. Between the true full-face coverage, the excellent field of view, and the visibility benefits of a bright color, it fits the way I actually ride my modified Super73.

If you want a retro full-face helmet that feels at home in the EV mini-bike world, this one is an easy recommendation.
