Beyond Riders Softshell Hoodie & Jacket: Real-World EV Riding Impressions
May 26, 2025
Finding riding gear for e-bikes and other EVs is weirdly hard. A lot of motorcycle stuff is overkill (and hot), and a lot of casual “streetwear” looks the part but doesn’t give me much confidence if I ever go down. I spent time riding in the Beyond Riders Softshell Hoodie and the Beyond Riders Softshell Jacket—both built specifically with EV riders in mind—and here’s what actually stood out once I wore them, moved around in them, and put real miles on them.

Why I Tried These
I wanted something I could realistically wear on everyday rides—errands, meetups, cruising around town—without feeling like I’m suiting up for a track day.
Beyond Riders positions these as lightweight, breathable softshell options made for EV riders, with abrasion resistance and CE certified armor pads. That combination is exactly what I’m after: more protection than a normal hoodie/jacket, without the heavy, bulky vibe.
First Fit: Softshell Hoodie
The hoodie immediately felt like it was designed to be worn on a bike, not just styled like one.
Mobility was the first win. When I moved my arms into a riding position, it didn’t feel like the whole thing was fighting me. That matters because a lot of armored tops feel fine standing still, then you get on the bars and everything bunches up.
The armor pads are the big “EV-specific” differentiator here. Having CE certified armor pads built in changes how I think about a casual ride outfit. I’m not pretending it’s a full moto jacket replacement, but it’s a meaningful step up from a standard hoodie.
First Fit: Softshell Jacket
The jacket comes off more like purpose-built outerwear. The vibe is cleaner and a little more “ready to ride” than the hoodie, while still staying in that everyday wearable lane.
On-body comfort was solid, and I liked how it felt when I shifted around—standing, sitting, leaning forward. Again, the key thing for me is whether the piece still works once I’m actually in a riding posture.
Like the hoodie, the jacket is designed around protection for EV riders, including abrasion resistance and CE certified armor pads. That built-in protection is the main reason I’d pick this over a normal jacket for regular riding.
On the Ride: What I Noticed
This is where softshell gear either makes sense or it doesn’t.
It stayed comfortable while moving
Lightweight and breathable sounds like marketing until you’re actually riding. In motion, both pieces felt like they were made for that “cruise airflow” reality—where you need comfort, but you also don’t want a flappy jacket or something that feels stiff and restrictive.
The protection vibe is real
Even without getting into a crash scenario (which I’m not trying to test), just knowing there are CE certified armor pads in place changes how relaxed I feel on faster e-bike/EV rides. It’s that mental shift from “I’m just wearing a hoodie” to “I’m wearing riding gear that happens to look casual.”
Everyday-wear friendly
This is the lane Beyond Riders is aiming for, and it’s the reason these pieces make sense for a lot of riders. I’d actually wear either one casually—especially the hoodie—without feeling like I’m walking around in dedicated motorcycle armor.
Hoodie vs. Jacket: Which One I’d Grab
If I’m keeping it simple:
I’d choose the hoodie when…
I want the most casual look and feel, but still want that extra protection baked in.
I’d choose the jacket when…
I want more of an outerwear feel—something that reads “riding jacket” a bit more, while still staying lightweight and wearable.
What We Like
EV-rider-focused design that still looks normal off the bike
Lightweight and breathable feel that works for real riding
Built-in CE certified armor pads add confidence over regular streetwear
Comfortable mobility in a riding position
Things To Consider
This is protective casual gear, not a full-on heavy moto setup—choose based on how and where you ride
Fit matters with armor; I’d pay attention to sizing so pads sit where they’re supposed to
Final Thoughts
If you ride e-bikes or other personal EVs and you’ve been stuck between “regular hoodie” and “full motorcycle jacket,” the Beyond Riders Softshell Hoodie and Softshell Jacket land in a genuinely useful middle ground.
They feel designed for the way we actually ride—short trips, mixed speeds, stop-and-go, and plenty of time off the bike—while still bringing real protection features to the table with abrasion resistance and CE certified armor pads.
If I had to pick one for daily use, I’d lean hoodie for the most wearable option and jacket for the more traditional “outer layer” feel. Either way, it’s gear I’d actually keep in rotation.
