Beyond Riders Protective Summer Mesh Shirt Review: Real Armor That Still Feels Like a Shirt

There’s a very specific kind of crash that makes you rethink your whole “I’m just going for a quick ride” outfit.

Beyond Riders

Not a huge moto-speed get-off. Just that everyday EV spill where your tire washes out on a dusty corner, you dab a foot and miss, or you slide on pavement for what feels like an eternity. Helmet saved my head, sure—but road rash is the part that lingers.

That’s the exact gap the Beyond Riders Protective Summer Mesh Shirt is trying to fill: more protection than a regular shirt/hoodie, without committing to a full-on heavy moto jacket every time I hop on an e-bike, EUC, or Onewheel.

Below is how it went when I unboxed it, installed the armor, dialed fitment, and rode in it.

Fit and first feel

I went with an extra small in black. The first thing I noticed pulling it out is that it has real weight to it. It doesn’t feel like a flimsy “mesh fashion shirt.” It feels like something that’s actually meant to take abuse.

Even though it’s marketed as a summer mesh shirt, in-hand it reads more like a lightweight protective jacket that happens to be button-up.

Once it’s on, though, the weight becomes way less of a thing. Because it’s spread across your back, shoulders, and arms, it doesn’t feel heavy on the body—it just feels substantial.

The look is clean: the mesh has a subtle sheen (not glossy, more like a faint reflective shimmer), while the cotton sections have a more matte finish. It’s a nice contrast and it doesn’t scream “motorcycle gear” from across the street.

Armor install (removable pads)

This shirt uses partition pockets inside for removable armor pads (CE approved). The pads themselves feel dense and durable—almost like a tougher, memory-foam-like material.

Installing them was straightforward, but I’ll be honest: without a dedicated install guide, I had a brief “am I doing this right?” moment. Once the pads were seated in their pockets, everything laid flat and felt correct on-body. Shoulder and elbow protection are the main focus here.

After install, it still doesn’t make me feel bulky. I can definitely feel the armor sitting where it should, but I don’t feel like I’m walking around in hockey gear.

Ventilation that actually works

The reason this piece makes sense for PEV riding is airflow.

The mesh panels do what they’re supposed to do: moving air. On the ride, it didn’t feel stuffy, and it didn’t trap heat the way a typical street jacket can.

There are also zip vents under the arms, and that’s a feature I instantly appreciated. Under-arm heat buildup is real when you’re riding, especially if you’re in stop-and-go city cruising or you’re standing up on a PEV and working harder.

If I wore only a t-shirt underneath, I can see this being genuinely summer-friendly. With a hoodie/sweatshirt under it, it still stayed comfortable—which also makes it more versatile than the “summer shirt” name suggests.

On-ride comfort and mobility

Riding in it reminded me of how a denim jacket sits on your body—structured but not restrictive.

It didn’t feel cumbersome in the arms, and the fit stayed comfortable in a riding position. That’s a big deal for EVs because we’re constantly shifting our posture: leaning, braking, turning our head, reaching for controls, sometimes standing and absorbing bumps.

The main takeaway is confidence. I don’t ride differently, but I worry less about a low-speed slide shredding my elbow and back.

Pockets, details, and daily practicality

This shirt is loaded with storage in a way that feels purposeful for riders:

Two outer chest snap pockets

Two outer hand pockets with zippers

Two inner pockets

On top of that, there’s a small microfiber cloth built into the bottom area that I can use to clean sunglasses or goggles. It’s one of those tiny additions that ends up getting used all the time.

The closures and fasteners (buttons, zipper, and internal attachment points) all felt strong—exactly what I want if the goal is to keep things together during a slide.

Sizing advice (this matters)

Sizing is the make-or-break part.

I tried a small and it wore more like a medium/large on me—too bulky for the look and feel I wanted. The extra small fit me well, even with a sweatshirt underneath.

If you plan to layer with something thick, sizing up can make sense. But if you want that fitted “shirt-jacket” vibe and you’re mostly wearing a t-shirt underneath, take the size chart seriously and don’t assume your usual size is correct.

Where this fits in an EV gear setup

Most of us are already pretty disciplined about helmets. Body protection is where we get lazy—especially on “just cruising” rides.

This shirt lives in that middle ground:

More protection than a standard tee/hoodie

Less intense (and less hot) than a full leather moto jacket

More normal-looking than a lot of hard-shell armored gear

For EUC and Onewheel riders who feel exposed, it makes immediate sense. For e-bike riders, it depends on how and where you ride—but if you’ve ever had a slow-speed spill that still tore up your clothes, you already understand the value.

What We Like

Real protective feel without being overly bulky

Breathable mesh with useful under-arm zip vents

CE approved removable armor pads

Plenty of pocket space for daily riding carry

Clean, low-key styling that works off the bike too

Works for summer riding, but layers well into cooler seasons

Things To Consider

It has noticeable weight in-hand (it’s not a thin shirt)

Pad installation is easy, but I would’ve loved clearer guidance

Sizing can run larger than expected depending on your build and layering plans

Final Thoughts

If you want a level of protection between a t-shirt and a full moto jacket—something you’ll actually wear on quick EV rides—the Beyond Riders Protective Summer Mesh Shirt makes a strong case.

It’s comfortable, it flows air, and it gives me that extra confidence that a simple fall won’t automatically turn into weeks of road rash recovery. For the kind of mixed-use EV lifestyle riding we do, it’s a practical piece of gear that doesn’t feel like overkill.
