Mooncool TK1 Review: A Foldable E‑Trike That Actually Makes Cargo Runs Easy

The Mooncool TK1 is the kind of EV that makes you rethink what “practical” can feel like. It’s a foldable electric trike with integrated cargo space front and back, a comfort-first ride position, and a stability-focused drivetrain that feels noticeably different than the front-hub trikes I’m used to.

I spent time walking through the details, folding it down, and getting a real first ride in with weight in the rear basket—because that’s how a lot of people will actually use a trike like this.

If you’re shopping for an e-trike because you want more stability, easier starts and stops, or just a more confidence-inspiring way to get outside (or run errands), the TK1 has a lot going for it—along with a few very real considerations.

Ride Feel: Stable, Predictable, and Confidence-Inspiring

The first thing I noticed riding the TK1 is how steady it feels, especially when turning. Trikes can sometimes give you that uneasy “am I about to tip?” sensation if weight shifts weirdly or the rear end feels like it’s fighting itself.

On the TK1, the rear differential is the hero. Tight turns felt controlled and natural, and the trike didn’t give me that sketchy, top-heavy vibe that some three-wheelers can.

Acceleration from a stop also felt strong and consistent. I ran it at pedal assist level 3 to start, and the trike had plenty of torque right off the line—even on a slight incline. It didn’t feel like it was waiting for traction up front or hesitating before it hooks up.

The Motor Placement Makes a Big Difference

A big part of that “consistent torque” feeling comes from the rear helical motor placement (centered in the frame rather than a front hub setup). With some front-hub trikes, you can almost feel like you need to bias your weight forward to keep things planted.

Here, uphill or downhill, it delivered power in a way that felt smooth and dependable.

Speed Reality Check

The TK1 tops out at 16 mph, and I felt it cap out pretty clearly—especially heading downhill where it still held that limit.

For relaxed neighborhood rides, paths, cruising to the store, or mobility-focused riding, 16 mph is totally workable. If you’re an experienced rider who’s used to faster Class 3 e-bikes (or even quicker Class 2 setups), you’re going to want to be honest with yourself about expectations.

Comfort and Control: Built to Be Friendly

Seating comfort is a strong point. The saddle has a lot of cushioning, and just sitting on the TK1 felt immediately welcoming.

Up front, you’ve got a coil spring suspension fork with lockout and preload adjustment, which should help take the edge off rougher pavement and mixed terrain.

I also like the overall control layout:

Riser/BMX-style bars give a comfortable, upright feel

Half-twist throttle on the right

Turn signals and an electronic horn control on the bars

A simple black-and-white display

The horn works, but it isn’t especially loud—more “heads up” than “get out of the way.”

Cargo Use: It Didn’t Get Weird With Weight in Back

For my first ride, I tossed a log in the rear basket to simulate cargo weight. Some bikes and trikes get awkward when you add load—handling changes, steering feels light, or the rear end starts to feel like it’s steering the bike.

On the TK1, it stayed composed. I honestly didn’t feel the weight back there in a way that changed the ride experience. That’s exactly what you want for grocery runs or carrying gear.

But there’s one practical oversight that kept coming up in my mind: there’s no kickstand (which makes sense on a trike) and I really wanted a brake lock.

Without some kind of brake parking lock, the TK1 can roll if you’re not on flat ground. With a trike that’s designed for accessibility and everyday errands, that missing “parking” solution feels like something that should’ve been addressed.

Foldability and Transport: Smart Design, Heavy Reality

The TK1’s foldable frame and collapsible stem are genuinely useful. Trikes are usually big and awkward to store, so being able to fold it down helps reclaim space.

The folding process is straightforward:

Collapse the stem

Release the frame latch

Move pedals out of the way

Fold it down

That said, weight matters. The TK1 weighs 116 lb, and that’s heavy. The battery is removable, which helps shave some weight for transport, but this is still not the kind of EV you casually lift into a vehicle by yourself unless you’re prepared for it.

Safety and Visibility: A Strong Feature Set

For riding in neighborhoods and around traffic, the lighting setup is a highlight:

There are also integrated front and rear fenders, which is a quality-of-life feature that matters more the first time you ride through anything damp or dirty.

16 mph top speed may feel limiting if you’re coming from faster e-bikes

No brake lock (and no kickstand) means it can roll on anything that isn’t flat

Electronic horn isn’t very loud

Final Thoughts

The Mooncool TK1 feels like it was built for real-life usability: stable cornering, comfy seating, practical cargo capacity, and a drivetrain that delivers power in a consistent, confidence-building way.
