Why The Fuji XT3 Is My Favorite B Cam
The Fuji XT3 is my favorite mirrorless camera even though it’s been around for awhile. There's a ton of reviews you can find online so I won't go too deep. Instead, I'll try to break down why the XT3 is my favorite B camera when paired with the Canon C200. The only other camera I previously owned was the Panasonic GH4 - a camera that I've used on so many of my favorite shoots that I think the only reason I've held onto it for so long was strictly for sentimental value. So I started to list the things I needed for a B cam. First, it would have to live comfortably on a gimbal like the DJI Ronin SC for quick tracking shots. Second, it would have to match up well with the Canon color science, primarily CLog 3. And finally, it had to be affordable.
And that's when I started to see the XT3 crop up in a lot of filmmaker kits. At a $1,500 dollar price point, it checked off one of my boxes which was affordability. You can also find some open box deals for even less on Amazon. The reason the XT3 is such a versatile camera is because of it's fantastic image quality and performance in all conditions. I've even used the XT3 in 126 degree weather in a Las Vegas desert and it performed flawlessly. The ability to record 4k 10-bit internally is pretty significant at that price point.
But let's back up to my first checkbox. How does it pair up with my Ronin SC? Well to be honest, it pairs up perfectly for my needs. The size and weight of the XT3 along with native x-mount lenses are just right for the Ronin SC. And although you can fly heavier cameras and lenses on the SC, you don't really get the kind of lightweight maneuverability you get with the XT3. The advanced autofocus and tracking capabilities are also some of the best I've seen, even slightly better than the dual pixel autofocus on the C200 in some cases. The XT3 does an awesome job with subject tracking even with moving targets and foreground objects.
And finally, how does it grade with the Canon C200? Well it grades perfectly when shooting in F-Log with matching color temperature and low ISO. The FLog on the XT3 has a significant amount of dynamic range and it's easy to match up with CLog 3 on the C200 using an FLog to Eternat LUT and CLog3 to Rec709 LUT. So overall, I'm really happy with the Fuji XT3 and if you follow my Instagram you'll see some of the stuff I've been posting with it. I love the size, the button layout and most of all the color science of Fujifilm.
