Super73 Z1 First Impressions & First Ride
Today we're doing our first impressions of the Super73 Z1 electric motorbike. Note that I said motorbike and not ebike. For about 3 years now, Super73 has put some massive effort into standing out from the pretty conventional electric bike scene and it shows. Lots of companies are starting to jump on this electric motorbike bandwagon. Yet most of them don't have that "IT" factor that Super73 seems to naturally have. I'll have a full review coming out soon but for now, we'll primarily focus on our first impressions from the unboxing to the first ride.
This design is really quite striking and looks much better in person. I ordered the jet black frame and teal seat. Both are much more vibrant in person with the black paint looking much glossier up close. It's definitely designed for short people like myself. With the long, banana style seat it can accomodate at least one adult and a child, but this will vary depending on your size and weight. My favorite part of the design is that the battery is hidden under the seat which leaves the frame open. Ebikes are typically cluttered with crap inside of the frame so this was really refreshing and minimalist.
I'm only used to riding my DIY mid-drive ebike so I wasn't quite prepared for the power of a 500 watt hub motor. I'm about 130lbs so getting up to the top speed of 20mph was very quick. It's good enough to get up gradual inclines but for anything steeper, it's probably best to use the pedal. I'm unsure if pedaling actually makes the battery last longer because it's hard to tell once the hub motor takes over. The 20" x 4" fat tires absorb a good amount of rough terrain but it's probably best for paved streets because you definitely feel every bump and crack in the road. The cable operated disc brakes are surprisingly strong, especially for a bike this heavy.
So my first impressions are that this is a great cruising around the town bike, especially if you live close to a downtown area maybe 3-5 miles away. It'll get you where you need to go and back. Anything longer than that I'd be hesitant to ride unless there was an option to charge it somewhere. There's also a surprising number of mounting points to add your DIY upgrades. I kind of like the stock look to be honest and any upgrades I'd do are probably minor cosmetic things like adding lights or fenders. And the biggest first impression? This is FUN. Like seriously fun. You will feel like a kid again and almost everyone tried it had a big smile on their face. I'll have a thorough review once I put it through it's paces but as of now, the Super73 Z1 is worth the hype.
