Zoom F2-BT Field Recorder Unboxing & First Impressions
The Zoom F2-BT is Zoom's smallest and lightest recorder that features 32-bit float technology. So what does 32-bit float recording actually mean? To put it simply, it means that you never have to worry about clipping or input levels because the 32-bit WAV file has so much headroom from a fidelity standpoint that setting the audio gain doesn't matter. In post production, the audio levels can be adjusted up or down with no additional noise or distortion. That's what makes 32-bit float recording a game changer. You just set it and forget it.
For power, the F2-BT can record up to 14 hours with only two AAA batteries and for storage, it records on microSD cards up to 512 gigabytes. It also comes with an LMF-2 omnidirectional lav mic with a windscreen and lapel mic clip. And with the free Zoom F2 Control app, you can wirelessly start/stop recordings, display battery levels, adjust output volume, control lo-cut and even receive and write timecode to the recorded files with a Bluetooth timecode device. Overall, this is a pretty amazing solution for podcasters, videographers, journalists and basically any creator that's on the field.
So that's all good but what are the cons? Well the only thing that stands out to me is the cost. Two hundred dollars is somewhat expensive for the build quality. It's made entirely out of plastic to make it extremely lightweight but I do wonder how it''ll hold up on the field. It just doesn't seem like something that would survive a fall on the floor. This could have been improved with a silcone sleeve or other protection. With that said, the size and weight does it make it more discreet and portable. Also, having Bluetooth controls and the 32-bit float recording does seem to justify the cost. So if your looking for a solid portable recorder that you can set and forget, then the Zoom F2-BT is a solid recommend.
