HXeBike Shark Mako Review: Shark Looks, Street Manners

The HXeBike Shark Mako is one of those e-bikes you notice immediately. The frame has that shark-inspired silhouette, and whether or not it truly “reduces drag,” it definitely stands out in a sea of lookalike commuter builds.

After putting it together, dialing it in, and riding it on both pavement and rougher desert-style trails, I came away with a pretty clear takeaway: the Shark Mako is a smooth, fast-on-top e-bike that feels happiest on streets and mellow paths, not chunky off-road.

Unboxing, Setup, and the Small Stuff

Assembly is mostly straightforward, but there’s a catch: the included fenders don’t come with instructions.

If you’ve built a few bikes, you’ll be fine. If you’re newer to wrenching, the fender mounting could be a little annoying. The rear fender in particular is a thin, basic plastic piece. I personally skipped installing the fenders because I liked the look better without them, and I wasn’t building this as a dedicated wet-weather commuter.

Once it’s together, the bike immediately feels relatively manageable for an e-bike when you’re moving it around by hand. It’s not featherweight, but it also doesn’t have that “moving a refrigerator” vibe some heavy builds do.

First Ride: Smooth Power, Not a Punchy Launch

The first thing I paid attention to was how it comes off the line on throttle.

It’s smooth. Really smooth. It builds speed cleanly, and it doesn’t feel jerky or unpredictable. But if you’re expecting a hard snap of torque from a stop, that’s not really the personality here. The power delivery leans more “roll on and go” than “rip your arms off.”

On flatter stretches it climbs into the 20s quickly, and getting up around 30 mph is absolutely on the table in the higher settings. The bike feels like it’s tuned more for top-end cruising than low-speed, grunt-heavy acceleration.

Pedal Assist: Natural, Predictable, and… a Bit Late

On pedal assist, the system feels natural and easy to live with. The motor engagement is subtle and smooth, which I love for everyday riding.

The one thing I noticed is the assist kicks in a little late. The upside is that it’s predictable. Once you understand when it comes on, it’s easy to ride smoothly without the bike constantly surging.

Also worth noting: moving up through assist levels didn’t feel like a massive jump in acceleration. The main difference felt like it opened the door for more speed rather than dramatically changing the bike’s “hit.”

Handling: Stable and Confident

The Shark Mako surprised me in a good way here.

The handling feels planted and balanced. It tracks straight, doesn’t feel twitchy, and it’s comfortable at speed. I could even cruise it steadily without feeling like the front end wanted to wander.

If you’re the kind of rider who values stability and smoothness over hyper-agility, this bike’s manners make sense.

Brakes: Strong, Easy to Trust

Braking performance was a highlight.

Stops felt controlled and confident, and the lever feel came across as properly set up (no sketchy, spongy “needs a bleed” feeling). When I did a more aggressive stop from around neighborhood speed, it slowed down quickly without drama.

The brake layout is also more moto-style (rear on the left), which I personally prefer because it feels natural coming from motorcycles.

Comfort: The Hardtail Reality Check

This is where the Shark Mako’s intended use starts to show.

It’s a hardtail, and that matters. Even on uneven pavement, I could feel it in my back. Off-road, it gets rough fast unless you stand a lot.

The front fork helps, but it doesn’t have a ton of travel, and it’s easy to bottom out when things get choppy. On smooth streets and bike paths, you can cruise comfortably. On rocky trails, you’re going to feel every bad decision.

Off-Road Riding: It’ll Do It, But It’s Not Home

I took it onto loose, sandy, rocky trail sections to see how it behaves when things get sketchy.

It can get through it, and the tires gripped better than I expected in fine sand. But the overall ride is stiff, and the rear end especially reminds you that you’re on a hardtail. Add in the fact that the bike doesn’t have a ton of low-end torque, and steep, technical climbs aren’t the mission.

Jumping it also felt a little odd, largely because the rear hub motor adds that heavy-in-the-back feeling. It’s not unusable, it just feels like a bike that would make more sense as a fast street commuter or a mellow-trail cruiser than a true off-road ripper.

Real-World Fit: Who This Bike Makes Sense For

If your riding is mostly:

commuting

neighborhood cruising

bike paths

smoother dirt roads or light trails

…this bike makes a lot of sense. It’s quick on the top end, stable, and smooth.

If your riding is mostly:

steep climbs

rocky trails

technical terrain where torque and suspension matter

…this isn’t the build I’d pick first.

What We Like

Very smooth throttle and pedal assist feel

Stable, confidence-inspiring handling

Brakes feel strong and properly set up

The shark-inspired frame is genuinely unique and clean-looking

Feels well suited to street riding and commuting

Things To Consider

Hardtail comfort: rough roads and trails can beat you up

Front suspension is easy to bottom out when you push it

Low-end torque feels limited, especially from a stop or on steep inclines

Fender install has no instructions, and the fenders themselves are basic

Final Thoughts

The HXeBike Shark Mako has real personality. It looks different, rides smooth, and feels built for speed and stability more than it’s built for clawing up steep terrain.

After riding it on pavement and then taking it into rougher off-road conditions, my verdict is simple: it’s a cool, fast, smooth e-bike with a clear lane. Keep it on the streets and smoother paths, and it’s a good time. Push it into rocky, technical terrain, and the hardtail layout and softer low-end torque start limiting the fun.
