Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser XR Review: Retro Style, Modern Punch, and Surprisingly Easy Handling

The Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser XR has that timeless “café racer meets beach cruiser” vibe, but it’s not just a looker. After setting it up, dialing in the cockpit, and getting miles on it, what stood out most to me was how easy it is to ride right out of the box. The power delivery feels polished, the steering is different (in a good way), and the overall package feels intentionally designed for cruising with style.

Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser XR

This is the XR frame in a latte gloss colorway, and in person it’s even better than I expected. Depending on the light and angle it can read like tan, brown, or almost an off-white. It’s got a clean, stealthy feel, especially with the battery hidden in the frame.

Retro looks, modern everyday usability

The handlebars are the heart of the Café Cruiser personality. They’re swept way back in a U-shape, so the whole steering experience feels different than a typical straight-bar commuter. On my first ride, it immediately encouraged a relaxed posture, and turning felt more like leaning the bike with my body than “fighting” the front end. Once I settled into it, it felt intuitive and fun.

The bike rolls on 26 x 3 inch tires that feel confidence-inspiring on the street, especially when the pavement isn’t perfect. Between the tire volume and the front suspension fork, the ride has a nice cushion to it for everyday city cruising and those less-paved paths the bike is clearly aimed at.

Fit and comfort (and who the XR frame is really for)

The XR frame is best for riders 5'7" and up. I could ride it, but at stops I had to do that one-foot-down, one-foot-on-the-pedal approach because of the stand-over and overall height. If you’re shorter or just prefer easier mounting and dismounting, the step-through version makes a lot of sense.

The saddle was a pleasant surprise. It’s big, supportive, and feels built for the long haul. Paired with the relaxed bar sweep, it really leans into that cruiser comfort.

Power delivery that feels “sorted”

This is a Class 3 e-bike with a 750W geared hub motor and a left-hand thumb throttle. I’m personally more of a right-hand throttle person, but functionally it worked fine.

What I loved most is the controller tuning. Power comes in smoothly and predictably. In pedal assist, it ramps up gradually instead of hitting with that abrupt surge some e-bikes have. Bumping up to higher assist levels and rolling into the throttle, it had plenty of push, but it stayed controllable.

If you’re new to e-bikes, that smoothness matters. And if you’re experienced, it’s the difference between a bike that feels “cheap fast” and a bike that feels refined.

Braking and control at speed

At Class 3 speeds, braking isn’t optional—it’s essential. The dual hydraulic disc brakes felt solid and provided quick, confidence-inspiring stops. I didn’t have to overthink it; I could build speed, then scrub it off quickly when I needed to.

The display is a minimalist black-and-white unit mounted on the left. It does the job, but it’s not flashy. For this style of bike, that simplicity actually fits the vibe.

Passenger kit: the fun, practical upgrade

One of the coolest parts of my setup was adding the optional passenger add-on. The rear rack is already integrated, and with the kit installed you get a passenger cushion, foldable pegs, and splash guards. The cushion uses a quick-release style latch, so it’s genuinely easy to pop on and off without messing around with tools.

Ride1Up rates the passenger capacity at up to 150 lb on the rear rack. If you want a cruiser that can double as a casual two-up errand runner (or just a ride-to-coffee setup with a friend), this add-on makes the Cafe Cruiser XR feel like a more complete lifestyle bike.

And if you remove the cushion, you’re back to a usable rear rack for a basket, crate, or daily cargo.

Weight and storage: the real-life tradeoff

The Cafe Cruiser XR weighs 65 lb. That’s the honest “you’re going to feel it” kind of weight.

If you live upstairs or need to lift your bike regularly, plan ahead. I’d remove anything removable (battery, passenger cushion, etc.) before hauling it. For most people, this is a garage/shed/elevator-friendly e-bike, not a “carry it up two flights every day” bike.

What We Like

Smooth, predictable power delivery that feels great right away

Café racer-inspired cockpit makes steering feel natural once you settle in

Latte gloss color looks premium and changes character in different light

Comfortable saddle and relaxed riding posture

Hydraulic disc brakes feel strong and confidence-inspiring

Passenger kit is genuinely practical with an easy on/off cushion setup

Integrated rack, fenders, and lights make it ready for everyday use

Things To Consider

65 lb is heavy if you need to carry or frequently lift the bike

XR frame fit is best for riders 5'7" and up (step-through is the better call for many)

Left-hand thumb throttle is functional, but not everyone’s preference

The black-and-white display is basic (fine for function, not for “tech wow”)

Final Thoughts

The Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser XR nails the “classic style with modern capability” brief. It looks distinct, feels comfortable, and the ride experience is the big win—smooth controller tuning, easy maneuvering, and power that’s there when you want it without feeling twitchy.

If your ideal e-bike is something you’ll actually want to ride every day—coffee runs, shoreline cruising, city errands, and the occasional rougher path—the Cafe Cruiser XR is a strong contender. Just be honest about the weight and make sure you pick the right frame style for your height and storage situation.
