DIY Haircuts During the COVID Pandemic
Now I’ve had a variety of haircuts over the years from amazing barbers so this isn’t really a substitution for that. But since most of us are spending a lot of time at home, this might be a solid temporary solution for grooming. Now obviously I have a shaved head so unless your really gifted at cutting your own hair, this type of setup may not fit. But it’s also good for trimming facial hair so there’s that.
So the first item I found is something called the Weather Pod which is about $100 bucks on Amazon. The Weather Pod is basically a 1 person pop-up tent with fully zippered see-through sides. I wanted something that would contain hair from flying all over the place while also allowing light in and the Weather Pod is perfect for that. Next I needed clippers and I discovered these Wahl Professional cordless clippers on Amazon as well. I’ve owned many cheap clippers in the past and nothing is worse than cheap clippers that either break down or lose sharpness. These Wahl clippers are super sharp and actually really powerful despite being cordless. It runs about an hour on a full charge which is perfect for a few cuts before needing to be recharged.
A fogless, plastic mirror is also essential for obvious reasons. This one has a hole in the center which makes it easier to hang inside of the tent. Buy two of them if you think you need to see both sides of your head. A battery powered LED closet light switch is perfect for rigging above the mirror so you have enough illumination while cutting your hair. This one has a magnetic base so you can actually attach it to the tent with other magnets. For shape ups I use a Diane Stainless Steel straight razor and an extra pack of shaving blades. These are super sharp and perfect for shaping up your hairline and facial hair. I’ve been using these blades since high school and they are really the best brand on the market. I also use a typical Gillette to clean up the rest of my facial hair.
So this is pretty much my DIY home hair cutting setup and the process is pretty straightforward. I pop the tent up and unfold it in the area I want to cut my hair. Since it’s a one person tent and only about 58” tall, it’s easy to place anywhere. For me, I usually like to cut my hair in the basement. Next I add the mirror and LED light on a transparent side of the tent. This will allow other practical lighting to illuminate the interior. And then I cut my hair which is pretty straightforward. I only use two clips for my haircut, one for the top and another for my facial hair. This takes me about 20 minutes because I want to make sure I clip everything and don’t leave any uneven spots. I usually hop in the shower once this is all done to clean off all the hair. Next I clean up the inside of the tent using a vacuum. Cleanup is super easy since all of the hair was contained inside and not flying all over the place. Once this is done, I simply fold the tent back up and place it back in its case.
Next is my shape up which is the fun part. Again, I’ve been lining up my hair with a straight razor since I was a kid so this part is easy. The blade is really sharp so its just a matter of tracing around my natural hairline until you get it even and clean. Then I use a Gillette razor for cleaning up the rest of my facial hair. After that, the haircut is done and I feel very refreshed and gratified that I was able to cut my own hair at home. I hope this was helpful to you, in case you were looking for some tools to cut your own hair at home. If you have any other tips about home haircuts please share them in the comments below.
