Freego X3 Pro Review: 72V Hub-Motor Power That Actually Feels Refined (and Fast)

The Freego X3 Pro is the kind of e-bike that makes you recalibrate what “fast” means in this category.

I expected a strong 72V electric dirt bike with a big battery and a punchy tune. What I didn’t expect was how quickly it climbed into the 50s, how smooth the power felt once it was moving, and how comfortable it stayed while hammering across broken pavement and light off-road.
It’s not perfect. It’s heavy. The pedal assist behavior is… quirky. And for something that can run up to the mid-50 mph range, the stock braking feel left me wanting more.
But if you’ve been eyeing something like the X2 Pro class of bikes and want a real step up in voltage and performance without immediately building a parts list, the Freego X3 Pro is a legitimate option.
First Impressions
The first thing that hits you is the scale.
The X3 Pro looks like what it is: a big, beefy, Sur Ron-style electric dirt bike with pedals. It’s reminiscent of the Freego X2 Pro at a glance, but the details quickly reveal that this is the “more serious” version.
This model uses a steel frame (my experience with the X2 Pro was aluminum), and you feel that weight immediately. The battery is a huge part of why: it’s a 72V pack rated at 50Ah, and it’s heavy enough that it shipped separately. That’s not a small thing in daily life—if your storage situation involves stairs or tight spaces, you need to think hard about what “132 pounds with the battery installed” really means.
On the plus side, the bike doesn’t feel awkwardly balanced. The mass is there, but it doesn’t come across as overly front-heavy.
Setup, Controls, and the Stuff You Touch Every Ride
The cockpit and controls are straightforward, with a few choices that stand out.
NFC start and parking mode
To power on, I held the power button, then swiped an NFC card. It boots into a parking mode, and you have to squeeze the brakes to unlock the ride modes.
That’s a nice anti-oops feature, especially on a bike that has this much power on tap.
Three ride modes
There are three power levels (1, 2, 3). Mode 3 is where the X3 Pro really feels like it wakes up, but I’ll get into that in the ride section.
Display, throttle, and lighting
Up front there’s a center-mounted LCD display and a full twist throttle.
Lighting is Sur Ron-style: an integrated headlight up front and a brake light out back. Turn signals are rear-only, and the tail light brightens when you squeeze the brakes.
Also: it has a moto-style horn, and it’s loud.
Battery access: clever and annoying
The battery compartment design is one of the most unique parts of the bike.
Instead of a simple drop-in compartment, there’s a lid and a built-in hard storage compartment on top (zippered). It’s actually handy for a phone or small items, and it appears mounted to a plate you could remove if you don’t want anything sticking up.
The actual battery access uses a combination lock. It works, but it feels like the kind of thing that could get old fast if you’re frequently removing the battery or accessing the compartment in a hurry.
Charging is through a port inside that compartment—so you’ll need to open it up to charge.

Size and Fit
I’m working with a 30-inch inseam, and I couldn’t quite flat-foot the bike. I could make it work with one foot down and one foot on the pedal, but the X3 Pro definitely feels like a larger platform than a lot of “e-bike” shaped e-bikes.
The handlebar position was comfortable, but I could see myself wanting riser bars to bring the bars back toward me a bit.
Power and Performance: Where the X3 Pro Really Shines
This bike is quick—especially once it’s already rolling.
Real top speed feels legitimately high
With a Dragy run, I saw the speed climb aggressively: 48… 51… 55… and I caught 56 on a pass (I even saw 57, and yes, I lost my hat doing it).
The more important takeaway isn’t the number—it’s that the bike doesn’t feel like it’s dying at the top end. It keeps pulling.
Off the line: torquey, but not a wheel-lift monster from a dead stop
From a standstill, it’s punchy, but it wasn’t instantly lifting the front wheel just by mashing the throttle. It wanted to, but the tune feels smooth down low.
That smoothness is a double-edged sword:
It makes the bike feel refined and easier to control.
It also means if you’re expecting instant “snap” at 0 mph, you’ll have to work for it.
Once the bike is moving, though, it feels completely different.
Mid-range is the sweet spot
Above roughly 20 mph, the X3 Pro starts to feel like it’s in its element. The bike rips in the mid-range and into the top end, and that’s where the 72V system really starts to show.
It’s the classic rear-hub high-power feel: low-speed pedaling and low-speed “assist” can feel awkward, but once there’s momentum and RPM in the motor, it becomes smooth, quiet, and fast.

Ride Quality: Surprisingly Comfortable for How Hard It Can Go
The suspension is one of the biggest surprises here.
The X3 Pro uses an inverted front fork and a KKE rear shock with adjustability (preload, compression, rebound). I didn’t measure spring rates or go deep into clicker settings, but what mattered was the result: over potholes, cracks, and rough parking-lot pavement, it stayed composed.
Even off-road, it felt planted and comfortable. I could feel the bumps (especially at speed), but it wasn’t punishing. It absorbed the chatter better than I expected, and it ended up being one of the more comfortable high-powered hub-motor bikes I’ve ridden on light trails.
Tires matter here, too. I was running them pretty soft, and that helped with compliance.

Handling and “Fun Factor”
For a heavy bike, it’s more playful than I expected.
Once it’s up into the balance point, it feels lighter than the scale number suggests. Modulation is good, and it’s easy to ride smoothly.
Wheelies are absolutely on the menu, but the pedals change the experience. My feet felt awkward trying to keep consistent placement while bringing the bike up, and the pedals can bounce around when you’re shifting your balance.
If you’re coming from a pedal-less electric dirt bike, that part takes adjustment.
Braking: It Stops, But I Wanted More Confidence
The X3 Pro uses hydraulic disc brakes with 203mm rotors front and rear.
In practice, the lever feel was soft, and it took longer than I wanted for the wheels to lock up during harder stops. It did stop the bike, but the combination of:
132 pounds of bike
real mid-50 mph capability
and a “bike brake” feel
…made it the first thing I’d upgrade if I planned to ride this aggressively.

Pedal Assist: The Most Confusing Part of the Bike
The pedal assist setup exists, and there’s a sensor at the crank, but it didn’t feel properly calibrated for the bike’s weight—especially in PAS 1.
PAS 1 felt almost useless
From a standstill, PAS 1 didn’t feel like it was really helping. It felt like I was doing all the work, and on a bike this heavy, that’s not a fun experience.
PAS 2 and PAS 3 are where it starts to make sense
PAS 2 felt better once it finally kicked in, but the key was getting the bike moving first.
The technique that worked best for me:
give it a little throttle from a stop
let the motor build some RPM and momentum
then start pedaling and let pedal assist take over
PAS 3 delivered the most noticeable assist, and it’s the only mode where the pedal assist felt immediately “awake.”
If you’re buying the X3 Pro hoping for a natural, bicycle-like pedal assist experience, that’s not really what this is. The pedals feel more like a compliance / optional input than the main way you’ll want to ride it.
Real-World Use Cases
Commuting (with caveats)
If you want a moped-like commuter with serious power, the X3 Pro can absolutely do it. It’s fast, smooth once rolling, and the lighting/horn help.
But you need to be realistic about legality. A bike with this much speed and power can fall into a street-legal gray area depending on where you live. It can also attract attention.
If you did want to pursue registration where possible, you’d likely be thinking about mirrors and other road equipment (and again, check your local rules).
Light off-road riding
On dirt and rough paths, it’s quiet, comfortable, and easy to ride. The suspension is a standout, and hub-motor simplicity means less drivetrain fuss.
That said, it’s still heavy. If you’re riding tight technical trails where you need to constantly manhandle the bike, that weight is going to show up.
Storage and transport
This is the practical deal-breaker for some people.
If you live upstairs, if you need to carry it often, or if your “garage” is a hallway closet, this probably isn’t the right tool. The battery is removable, and pulling it makes the bike easier to handle, but it’s still a large, heavy machine.
What We Like
Mode 3 performance is legitimately fast, with strong top-end pull
Smooth power delivery that’s easy to control once moving
Surprisingly comfortable suspension on rough pavement and light off-road
Quiet rear hub motor feel with lower maintenance than a comparable mid-drive setup
Big battery potential for longer rides if you’re not constantly pinned
Things To Consider
At 132 lb (with battery), storage and transport can be a real challenge
Stock brakes felt soft for the bike’s weight and speed potential
Pedal assist isn’t well-calibrated in PAS 1, and it takes technique to make it feel natural
The combination-lock battery access is functional, but can be annoying day-to-day
Street legality is a question mark depending on where you live
Final Thoughts
The Freego X3 Pro feels like a real step up from the typical “Sur Ron-style e-bike” experience, mostly because it combines 72V speed with a tune that’s smooth and usable instead of feeling twitchy or unpredictable.
If you want a powerful, quiet hub-motor dirt bike that can comfortably rip around lots, rough streets, and light off-road—and you have the space to store something heavy—this is a fun machine with real performance.
If you need something you can easily carry, pedal like a normal bike, or stop aggressively from high speed with complete stock confidence, I’d think twice (or budget for brake upgrades).
