Heybike Mars 2.0 Review: A Foldable Fat-Tire E-Bike With Surprisingly Punchy Power

I spent time getting it folded, adjusted, and ridden across mixed terrain, and the biggest takeaway is simple: this bike has more punch off the line than I expected from a folding fat-tire commuter-style setup.

Getting Set Up: Foldability That Actually Feels Useful

The foldable frame is one of the Mars 2.0’s standout features in day-to-day life. Folding it down is straightforward once you do it once:

Fold the pedals

Drop the stem using the latch

Release the frame latch and “taco” it closed

It ends up in a compact shape that makes a lot more sense for apartment storage, garage corners, or sliding into a vehicle than a full-size fat bike.

That said, it’s still a 75 lb e-bike. Folding helps with storage and transport, but it doesn’t magically make it light. If you’re carrying it up stairs regularly, the weight is a real consideration.

Design Details I Noticed Immediately

A few things jumped out at me before I even rolled out:

The pumpkin orange aluminum frame looks great in person and has that outdoorsy vibe.

The integrated rear rack is substantial, and the extended design gives you real usable space.

The saddle is big and cushy with a lot of foam—nice for casual cruising.

The battery access is clever: flip the seat up and the removable battery is right there.

I also like that the battery has a USB port. It’s one of those small features that becomes surprisingly handy if you’re running your phone for navigation or want to top off a light or accessory.

Lighting and Controls: A Cool Front Headlight Setup

The headlight integration is different than what I’m used to. The front light has multiple LED elements and it’s bright—something I’d actually trust for night riding.

The cockpit is simple:

A center-mounted LCD display that’s basic but large and easy to read

Buttons for the front light and the rear tail light

A horn button

Right-hand thumb throttle

It’s not a fancy “premium” interface, but it’s practical and easy to understand.

First Ride: The Power Comes On Fast

I started off in pedal assist level 3 and the assist hit quickly—like “oh, we’re moving” quickly. The torque feels immediate, and the bike jumps forward in a way that’s fun but also something you need to be ready for.

Dropping down to pedal assist level 1 made it easier to control. There’s still plenty of torque, but it’s less abrupt. For bike lanes or casual cruising, that calmer delivery feels a lot more natural.

When I bumped it up to pedal assist level 5, it got spicy. The bike pulls hard from a stop, and the ramp from low power to max power feels short. If you’re new to e-bikes—or you’re weaving through pedestrians or tight bike-lane traffic—this is not the setting I’d start with.

But if you’re riding off-road, on loose surfaces, or you just want that quick burst to get moving, that punchy delivery is a good time.

Mixed Terrain: Fat Tires Do Fat Tire Things

I rode it onto grass to see how it handled uneven ground. I could definitely feel the bumps, and I hadn’t adjusted the fork preload yet. Even so, between the fat tires and the front suspension fork, the bike held its line and stayed composed.

This is where the Mars 2.0 makes sense: it feels stable and confidence-inspiring when the surface gets unpredictable.

The integrated fenders (front and rear) are also a big plus if you actually plan to ride when the ground is wet or gritty. They help keep the mess off you, and for a utility/adventure e-bike, that matters.

Braking: Decent, But Not My Preference

The mechanical disc brakes were fine in my testing—decent stopping power—but I still prefer hydraulic brakes for better feel and more consistent modulation.

If you’re coming from a basic bike, you’ll probably be fine with these. If you’re used to hydraulics, you’ll notice the difference.

Speed Reality Check

Heybike advertises a top speed of 28 mph, but in my riding the bike topped out at 20 mph. It may be a setting that can be unlocked in the controller, but out of the box, what I experienced was a 20 mph cap.

Fit and Comfort: Taller Riders Will Be Happier

Fit matters a lot on folding fat-tire bikes, and this one feels tall in the saddle.

At my height, I couldn’t flat-foot it at stops with the seat all the way down. The good news is the step-through area makes it easier to step off the saddle when you come to a stop.

Still, I’d be cautious if you’re under about 5'5". Between the saddle height and the bike’s overall bulk, shorter riders may not feel as confident mounting, dismounting, or managing it at low speeds.

Cargo and Practicality

The rear rack is genuinely useful, and it’s rated for 120 lb. With the rack space plus the overall “stable fat bike” platform, this is the kind of e-bike I’d actually use for errands, carrying gear, or loading up for a long cruise.

Out-of-the-box, I only saw 20 mph top speed (despite 28 mph being advertised)

Power delivery can feel abrupt, especially in pedal assist level 5

Mechanical disc brakes are fine, but not as refined as hydraulic

Fit may not be ideal for riders under 5'5" (saddle sits high)

75 lb is manageable for some, but carrying it upstairs can be a hassle even if it folds

Range claims can be optimistic depending on how you ride (throttle use, assist level, terrain, rider weight)

Final Thoughts

The Heybike Mars 2.0 feels like it was built for the rider who wants one e-bike to do a lot: cruise comfortably, handle rougher surfaces, carry cargo, and fold away when you’re done.

The personality of this bike is its power. It’s not the mellow, “tame” folding fat-tire experience I’ve had with some other models—this one wants to leap forward when you ask for it. If you like a lively ride and you’ll actually use the fat tires for exploring, it’s a strong contender.

If you’re shorter, sensitive to abrupt assist, or you need something you’ll carry up stairs constantly, I’d think carefully before jumping in. But for taller riders who want a versatile folding adventure e-bike with real punch, the Mars 2.0 is easy to have fun on.
