Meebike Gallop Step-Thru Review: A Smooth, Quiet Moped-Style E-Bike That’s Built for Daily Utility
October 11, 2022
The Meebike Gallop Step-Thru landed in that “moped-style utility” sweet spot I’m always curious about: fat tires, a long comfy seat, a real rear rack, and a step-thru frame that makes hopping on and off effortless.

After assembling it, fixing a couple shipping-related quirks, and putting it through a mix of neighborhood streets, small hills, and everyday cruising, the biggest takeaway was simple: this bike feels unusually smooth and quiet for the category.
If you’re shopping for a daily commuter that can handle some imperfect pavement (and the occasional light trail), here’s how the Gallop Step-Thru felt in real life.
Unboxing and assembly: mostly straightforward, but shipping matters
Assembly was pretty typical for a shipped e-bike: front wheel, bars, and getting everything aligned and tightened. Nothing scary, but I did run into two issues that felt more like transit damage than a design flaw.
The headlight bracket was bent out of the box. I ended up using a vise to bend the steel back into shape. It worked, but it was time-consuming and not something most people want to deal with on day one.
I also noticed the tail light wiring was a bit stressed/pulled. I reseated the wire in the connector and added a zip tie to relieve strain so it wouldn’t get yanked again.
Cosmetically, I saw a small scratch on the rear rack—minor, but worth mentioning.
First look: a purpose-built utility layout
The Gallop Step-Thru has a very “load it up and go” vibe.
Step-thru frame makes it easy to mount, especially if you’re shorter or if you’re carrying stuff.
Integrated rear rack looks ready for baskets, bags, or daily errands.
Battery sits low and integrated into the frame, which keeps the bike looking clean and helps the balance.
Color-wise, mine was white with subtle branding. It’s simple, and I think it fits the “daily utility” identity.
Fit and comfort: the seat is a big win
This style of bike lives or dies by comfort, and the Gallop got a lot right.
The long moped-style seat felt genuinely comfortable and supportive. The riding position worked well for me, and the bars felt naturally placed (I’m about 5'6.5”). I didn’t feel like I had to fight the bike to get comfortable.
Suspension also plays a role here. With front and rear suspension, the ride felt forgiving over rougher sections of road—more “glide over it” than “get bounced around by it.”
The ride: quiet, smooth power delivery (the torque sensor helps)
The standout ride quality here is smoothness.
A lot of e-bikes in this category can feel jerky, especially when pedal assist kicks in. On the Gallop, the torque sensor makes the assist feel more natural. When I put in more effort, I got more help—without that on/off lurch.
The rear hub motor was also impressively quiet. It’s the kind of quiet where you notice it because you’re not hearing much—just rolling tires and wind.
This tuning made it feel like a solid urban commuter: easy to ride, predictable, and not annoying in stop-and-go situations.
Speed and real-world power: fun, but not a “no-pedal hill climber”
Out of the box, this is a Class 2 e-bike rated for 20 mph. There is a way to unlock the speed limit through the display, and in my riding I saw mid-20s mph under the right conditions.
On flatter runs I was seeing around 20 mph, and with some help from terrain I saw the display climb higher (mid-to-high 20s on slight downhill stretches). I also compared the display to GPS and they tracked reasonably closely in my testing.
Where the Gallop is very honest is hill climbing: on steeper inclines, throttle alone wasn’t enough to keep it charging hard uphill. Even at the highest assist level, I needed to pedal and contribute. It’ll climb, but you can’t expect it to be a motorcycle.
That said, for typical city grades and everyday commuting, the power felt appropriate and controllable.
Practical details I appreciated day-to-day
A few things stood out as “this is nice to live with”:
Removable battery: easy to pull for indoor charging and practical if you ever want to carry a spare.
Lighting: the headlight has different modes (including a daytime-running-light look), and the tail/brake light behavior was noticeable.
Rack utility: it immediately felt like a bike I’d actually use for errands.
Step-thru accessibility: especially helpful if you’re not tall or if flexibility is a factor.
Range expectations: keep them realistic
Marketing claims can be optimistic across the industry, and the Gallop is no exception.
Based on the battery size and how bikes like this get ridden (higher assist, more throttle, heavier bike, fat tires), I’d treat big range numbers as best-case scenarios. If you plan to ride fast, use higher assist levels, or deal with hills, expect real-world range to come down.
The good news is the battery is removable, so you’ve got options: charge it off the bike, or swap a spare if that’s part of your routine.
What We Like
Very smooth pedal assist feel (torque sensor tuning is a standout)
Quiet rear hub motor
Comfortable moped-style seat
Front + rear suspension makes it easy to live with on rougher roads
Step-thru frame is genuinely convenient
Integrated rear rack makes it feel ready for commuting/errands
Battery integration looks clean and keeps the center of gravity low
Things To Consider
Shipping/handling can make or break the first impression (I had a bent headlight bracket and a stressed tail light wire)
On steep hills, you’ll still need to pedal even at high assist/throttle
Range claims should be taken as best-case; higher-power riding will reduce real-world distance
Price is a big factor in this category, and there are a lot of competing bikes around the same spend
Final Thoughts
The Meebike Gallop Step-Thru surprised me with how refined it feels on the road. The smoothness is real, the motor is quiet, and the overall layout makes sense for someone who wants a comfortable, practical e-bike they can actually ride every day.
It’s not a bike I’d pick if my main goal was blasting up steep hills on throttle alone. But if you want a calm, stable commuter with fat tires, useful cargo potential, and a step-thru frame that’s easy to live with, the Gallop fits the lifestyle.
My biggest ask for Meebike is tighter consistency on shipping/quality control so more people get that “great first ride” experience right out of the box.
