ShredLights SL-1000 on the Super73 Z1: A Modular Headlight That Actually Feels Built for EV Life

If you ride a Super73 Z1 (or any PEV) after dark, you already know the struggle: most lights are either “good enough” to be seen, or bright enough to actually ride confidently—but rarely both, and even more rarely in a clean, modular package.

Shredlights

I installed the ShredLights SL-1000 on my Super73 Z1 to see if it’s the kind of upgrade that changes how you ride at night, or just another accessory that looks cool in photos.

Why I Wanted the SL-1000 on the Z1

The Z1 is a simple, fun bike—and that’s part of the appeal—but lighting can feel like an afterthought depending on how your setup is configured.

What I wanted was a headlight that:

Feels secure on an e-bike that vibrates and gets tossed around

Has a beam I can actually ride with (not just a “be visible” glow)

Can adapt to different situations without buying multiple lights

The SL-1000 is basically ShredLights answering the “make it really bright” request, while keeping the modular ecosystem that makes their stuff easy to mount and move around.

Unboxing and First Impressions

Right out of the box, the SL-1000 felt less like a flimsy bike accessory and more like a legit flashlight. The aluminum shell gives it that durable, “this can take a hit” vibe, and it has a reassuring weight in-hand.

The kit I used included:

A handlebar mount

The proprietary reinforced S-LOCK mount hardware

A rubber strap

Two modular lens caps/diffusers (medium and narrow)

There’s also a very serious warning about maximum brightness potentially blinding yourself or others—and after turning it on, I understood why immediately.

Install on the Super73 Z1

Mounting it to the Z1’s handlebars was straightforward using the included bar mount and strap system. ShredLights’ S-LOCK setup is the real highlight here: it feels secure and deliberate, not like one of those mounts that slowly rotates downward the moment you hit rough pavement.

The “reinforced” S-LOCK on my unit had a rubberized coating over the aluminum, which helped it feel sturdier and less likely to get beat up over time.

Once mounted, the SL-1000 looked right at home on the Z1—clean, compact, and not awkwardly oversized.

Controls and Everyday Usability

The control layout is simple:

Two side buttons for modes

One top button for brightness

I like that brightness is separate from the mode changes. On real rides, that matters—because you can dial output up or down without cycling through a bunch of flashing patterns when you just want more light.

And yes, it has multiple strobe/flashing modes. They’re powerful—almost too powerful. On the road, I’d be very careful with the highest-intensity flashing options because they can be extremely jarring to other people.

Beam Pattern: The Modular Lens Caps Actually Matter

This is where the SL-1000 gets fun.

Instead of being stuck with one beam shape, the SL-1000 uses a modular lens cap system. Swapping caps changes diffusion and beam angle, which lets you tune the light to the kind of riding you’re doing.

Medium diffuser: noticeably changes the spread and softens the beam.

Narrow diffuser: the name is a little counterintuitive, because it slightly broadens the beam in practice.

On the street, those options are genuinely useful. A tighter, punchier beam can feel better when you want more forward throw; a broader spread is more comfortable when you want to see more of the immediate area around your front wheel.

Night Ride Impressions (Real-World Use)

At full blast, the SL-1000 is bright—like “I get why they put that warning on the box” bright.

What stood out most to me wasn’t just raw output, but how confident it made the ride feel. It’s the difference between:

being seen by cars, and

actually being able to read the road ahead and react sooner

With the right diffuser choice and brightness level, it felt practical instead of obnoxious, and I could tailor it depending on where I was riding.

More Than a Headlight: It Doubles as a Flashlight

One thing I didn’t expect to appreciate as much as I did: the SL-1000 can easily pull double duty as a flashlight.

Even if you already have some kind of headlight setup, having a removable 1000-lumen light you can slap on a backpack or helmet (with the right mounts) is just a smart safety move. We’ve always pushed the idea that more visibility = more safety, and this fits that mindset perfectly.

Build Quality and Design Vibes

A lot of cheap lights work… until they don’t.

The SL-1000 feels like it belongs in the “electric vehicle life” category instead of the “random bike light” category. The materials feel premium, the mounting system feels purpose-built, and the modular lens setup feels like a thoughtful design choice rather than a gimmick.

What We Like

Extremely bright output that genuinely improves night riding confidence

Reinforced S-LOCK mounting system feels strong and secure

Modular lens caps let me tune beam spread to the ride

Separate brightness control makes it easier to use in the real world

Durable aluminum shell with a quality feel

Works well as both a headlight and a handheld flashlight-style light

Things To Consider

Max brightness can be intense; use responsibly around traffic and other riders

Flashing modes are very attention-grabbing—great for emergencies, potentially obnoxious for regular road use

If you want helmet/backpack mounting, you’ll want to build out the right mount setup for your gear

Final Thoughts

On the Super73 Z1, the ShredLights SL-1000 feels like one of those upgrades that immediately makes the bike more usable at night. It’s not just “brighter than stock”—it’s bright enough to change how confident you feel rolling through dark streets.

What sold me is the combination of real durability, a secure mounting system, and the modular lens caps that let me shape the beam to match the ride. If you want a stylish, high-output light that feels designed for PEVs (not just bicycles), the SL-1000 is an easy recommendation.
